So here is the completed roof. It took me just over 3 months to get to this point - but that was only when the weather was OK and I felt in the mood. About what I expected.
I have been reasonably happy with the design and construction so far. As already noted, the proportions could have been better. Adding the shingles has given a little more height, but I would really have liked the gables to have been much deeper. However, the best solution could only have been achieved by increasing the overall height or by reducing the wall height, neither of which I really wanted to do. Although, from hindsight, I would have achieved a better overall shape simply by making the ridge about 6-8" wider on each side, which would have made the gables deeper without changing the pitch of any roof section.
But the shingles are really lovely - and are expected to weather over time to more of an even grey.
Go on to Walls and windows or go back to the start of Roof construction.
