The Measures name

We have heard that my 2x great grandfather William Pashler married Mary Measures from another significant farming family in the Huntingdonshire and Bedfordshire area. As for the Pashlers, we have discovered several groups of Measures in this area, almost certainly related but not yet connected.

My 7x great grandfather, James Measures, married Sarah Eaton in Pertenhall, Bedfordshire, on 1st July 1695, and it is quite likely that most, if not all, of the Measures with whom I am related originated either in the Pertenhall area or around Goldington near Bedford. Later generations spread a little, mainly to the villages of Tilbrook, Great Catworth and Ellington in Huntingdonshire. Again, like the Pashlers, most of the Measures were farmers or agricultural labourers, although James and a number of his descendants were millers.

Another James Measures (1791-1839), my 3x great grand uncle, who was born in Ellington, married the wonderfully named Aolti Mira Armstrong from another local farming family in Graffham, Huntingdonshire in 1812. The Aolti name appears in several subsequent generations.

My 3x great grandfather, Benjamin Measures (1807-1865) was born in Ellington, married Mary Fletcher in 1830 and was a successful farmer at Grange Farm, Great Catworth. One of his sons, also Benjamin (1842-1924) was even more successful, farming at Brook End, Great Catworth, and later at The Grange, Tilbrook, Bedfordshire, becoming a wealthy landowner and merchant, magistrate and county councillor.

The marble plaque shown above is in St. Leonard's Church, Great Catworth, although he and his wife are buried at Tilbrook..

My 2x great grandmother, Mary Measures (1844-1912), the sister of the latter Benjamin, married William Pashler in 1862 and they also farmed at Brook End, Great Catworth. They similarly have a plaque in St. Leonard's Church.
