Strangers in Talland

Richard Stranger (1825-1882) was my great great grandfather. He was born and baptised at Holne, Devon and was the eldest son of Thomas Stranger (1797-1868) and Susan Endle (nee Perring). The family lived initially in Holne but by 1851 had moved to the Town Farmhouse in Ilsington, Devon.

In 1851, Richard married Elizabeth Berry, who was at that time living in nearby Lower Sigford with her brother Joseph and sister Dorothy, and set up as a farmer in his own right. They had four children, all born in Ilsington: Edward (born 1852), Charles (my great grandfather - born 1853), Elizabeth Berry (usually known as Bessie - born 1855) and Dorothy (usually known as Dorrie - born 1857).

Richard then decided to move the family to Cornwall, although what prompted this move is not yet known. By 1871, Elizabeth was already set up as a farmer at Porthallow, Talland, with Bessie and Charles, while Dorrie was at school in Teignmouth, Devon. Richard and Edward were still in Ilsington, lodging at the Carpenter’s Arms - possibly as a temporary accommodation while disposing of the farm and wrapping up their affairs (and/or Richard's recenty deceased parents' affairs) in Devon before following on to Cornwall. Or perhaps they had all already moved to Talland and he and Edward had returned for such a reason? Either way, by 1873 they were all back together at Porthallow, Talland, Cornwall.

It is not at all certain that the photo here is of Richard, but was found in a collection of family photos and believed initially to be his son Charles. Although there are some facial similarities, it is now thought more likely that it is of Richard.
