Ryōanji-gaki (contd.)

This style of fence uses round wooden posts (oyabashira) with slightly thinner intermediate posts (mabashira). I used 100mm treated stakes for the former and 75mm for the latter.

The traditional way of preparing the posts was to scorch them in a fire and then rub them down with straw. I chose the much easier approach of a near-black woodstain, which produced a similar appearance.

Since the intention was to hide the existing concrete posts, the positioning was essentially predetermined - which meant that the distance between the posts was not exactly equal (the average was about 3m between oyabashira). It also inevitably meant that I had to break up some of the concrete into which the concrete posts had been set, which was a tough job.

ryoanji-gaki - postsThe oyabashira were fixed in position using a proprietary ready-mixed post fixing product. A line was then extended tautly between each pair of oyabashira on the rear side and a mabashira was fixed in position with its front edge close to the line.
