Ryōanji-gaki (contd.)

The next step was to order the bamboo poles. These are typically sold in various lengths and butt end diameters (where the latter is usually expressed as a range). I had decided that the main horizontal supporting pieces (dōbuchi) (which would actually be hidden when the fence was complete) would be 40/45mm thick, while the kumiko forming the diamond pattern would be 30/35mm. The oshibuchi (and kasa-dake top cap) forming the top moulding (tamabuchi) and bottom moulding would be 70/80mm which I would split myself.
