Roof (contd.)

hip rafters fitted and temporary ridge supports removed

Once the hip rafters were fitted, along with the front and rear central common rafters, I felt it was time to remove the temporary ridge structure, which would increasingly be in the way.

For the first time, I was starting to get an idea of the overall proportions, which I did not find ideal. The roof really should have been closer in height to that of the walls (up to eave height) and the gables needed to be deeper. But it was not clear what I could have done differently other than increasing the overall height considerably, which I did not want to do.

I had been over-concerned with ensuring that the eaves were above head height, whereas the proportions would have been better if the eaves were about 5-6" lower with the ridge at the same height. But it was too late to go back that far.

Left is the side view. Note the asymmetric ridge, which has successfully created a longer front eave to cover the veranda.
