Roof (contd.)

front and rear common rafters fitted

Cutting and fixing the rafters certainly took some time. Although I took measurements and angles from the 3D model where I could, in practice there was a certain amount of trial and error (or rather a lot of trial and a fair amount of error!).

Shown left is with the front and rear rafters fitted. The rafters are all 4x2" (100x50mm) treated softwood, while the ridge is 6x2" (150x50mm). All were given 1 coat of dark oak woodstain before being fitted, since there would be no ceiling and hence they would be visible internally.

Although I had originally intended to cut the heel ends of the rafters vertically (as in the Sketchup model), in the end I decided to cut them horizontally as I did not intend to fit a gutter and therefore did not need a fascia board.

Also shown are the diagonal braces (also 4x2") fitted to the upper corners of the side and rear walls for additional stability (I did not do the same at the front as this will have sliding sections and the design was not yet clear - but they can be added later if needed). Notice that these are not stained as they will eventually be covered by exterior and interior wall cladding.
