The next step was to mark out the corner positions more accurately in preparation for digging the holes for the footings. To do this, I employed the first of several improvisations: using croquet hoops (rather than the more usual batter boards) to run mason's line across the corner points and allow the pegs to be removed for digging the holes. It was surprising how convenient and yet fully practical the croquet hoops and their scoring clips were, but unfortunately a croquet set only has 6 hoops so I still had to make 2 batter boards!
