Ryōanji-gaki (contd.)

ryoanji-gaki - complete

And this is the completed fence, I am reasonably happy with it and it is generally admired.

One aspect that has been a little disappointing is how quickly the bamboo discolours and the twine fades. It means that about every year or two I have to clean the fence with a non-metallic pan scourer and warm water with a little washing-up liquid and then rub down all the bamboo pieces with boiled linseed oil, as well as replacing all the twine. This does work well in restoring the beauty of the fence for a while, but I think I will investigate the possibility of a varnish or lacquer.
