laying shingles

Finally I could start laying shingles. These were fixed with a 5" (125mm) exposure, using two 30mm stainless steel annular nails for each shingle approximately 6.75" (170mm) up from the butt end so as to be hidden by the next course. The first course extended beyond the sheathing by 1.5" and was doubled as specified in the manual.

Care needed to be taken to ensure that the shingles were positioned correctly and level, with joints suitably staggered.

As a useful aid to positioning, I cut pieces of batten in 5", 6.75" and 1.5" lengths as guides.
