Drums played with the hands from Cuba and Puerto Rico, with roots in the cylindrical drums of Africa. Many countries have similarly shaped drums, such as the atabaques of Brazil, or the solid wood carved ngomas of central Africa.

Congas are often used in the conga dance and now in many forms of American music.
