wheat beer

A beer that is brewed with a large proportion of wheat in addition to malted barley. Wheat beers are usually top-fermented (as required by law in Germany) and hence are considered ales rather than lagers. The main varieties are weissbier (including hefeweizen), witbier and the sour varieties such as lambic, Berliner weisse and gose.

Although predominantly produced in Germany and Belgium, some breweries in the USA and Canada, and even the UK, are now also producing wheat beers.

Wheat beers are commonly marketed as spring or summer seasonal products.
