India pale ale

Also known as IPA, this is a hoppy beer style within the broader category of pale ale which was first brewed in England in the 19th century. One such variety of pale ale at the time was October beer, a pale well-hopped brew which was intended to be kept in cellar for 2 years. This proved popular in India and other Burton brewers followed suit with strongly hopped pale ales in a similar style.

IPAs have a bitter taste because of the hops used to brew the ale. There is also a citric taste, usually with notes of grapefruit. The colour of an IPA can vary from a light golden to a reddish amber.

Modern IPAs have also been brewed in Canada, the USA and Australia since before 1900.
