kaganu

A single-headed drum of the Ewe people of Ghana. It is approximately 18 inches tall, has one 6 inch diameter head and an open bottom. It is struck with two thin sticks and usually plays one of the shortest repeating patterns of the ensemble. It is considered the 'child drum' of the Ewe drum family. The combination of axatse, gankogui and kaganu form the rhythmic ground in Ewe music.
