A Spanish lute with a flat back and a pear shaped body, played with a plectrum, which belongs to the cittern family of instruments. It has 6 double courses (i.e. 12 strings in pairs), similar to the bandurria, but its neck is longer. Traditionally it is used folk string musical groups, together with the guitar and the bandurria. Like the bandurria, it is tuned in fourths, but its range is 1 octave lower.
