A Middle Eastern lute-like instrument developed in Instanbul in the 1900s and believed to be inspired by the oud. Its body consists of a skin stretched over the mouth of a metal bowl. The neck is much longer than that of the oud and is fretless. The body was borrowed from the much older "yayli tambur" (bowed tambur).
