American drummer who was a member of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band between 1978 and 1981.
Born in Boston, Williams began playing drums at the age of 5. After a brief job as roadie for Beefheart at the age of 17, he made his way to Hollywood when he was 21 and played with Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. After getting fired, Ed Mann (former Zappa percussionist) called him to say that Beefheart was looking for a drummer. Williams played on Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) and Doc at the Radar Station. During that time he also made an album with the singer/guitarist for The Stranglers, Hugh Cornwell called Nosferatu, and then recorded two solo records for A&M called Buy My Record and Late One Night. He was also doing sessions all over LA.
