Perhaps one of the biggest stars to arise out of the American country soul scene.
Born in Sheffield, Alabama, Alexander recorded his first single in 1960. His best known song, You Better Move On, was covered by many artists, including the Rolling Stones and the Hollies.
He continued to write and record during the 1960s and early 1970s, but faded thereafter.
For many years, Alexander was out of the music business, mostly employed as a bus driver. He began to perform again in 1993 as renewed interest was shown in his small but important catalogue. He signed a new recording contract and recorded another album, but suffered a fatal heart attack shortly afterwards.
