Founded in 1964 as an Elektra subsidiary to license European classical music. In the late 1960s, the Nonesuch Explorer Series made Nonesuch a pioneer in the field of world music.

After the buy-out of Elektra by Warner, and the subsequent merger of the Elektra and Atlantic labels, Nonesuch became a sub-label of Warner Brothers Records Inc., which is part of the Warner Music Group.
