A small but influential record label set up between 1959 and 1960 by John Fahey, Norman Pierce and Ed Denson. It was named after Fahey's hometown - Takoma Park, Maryland.

Fahey had started a new genre of guitar music, known later as American Primitivism, which comprised traditional fingerpicking steel string guitar techniques applied to neo-classical compositions. The Takoma label showcased such music, with an artist roster including Leo KottkePeter LangRobbie Basho and Mississippi bluesman Bukka White.

FaheyKottke and Lang released an eponymous compilation of instrumental tracks in 1974 which became Takoma's most influential release, bringing American Primitivism to an international audience.

In 1978, the label was taken over by Chrysalis and in the 1980s by Allegiance Records. In 1995, the Takoma catalogue was purchased by Fantasy Records. In 2004, Fantasy was merged with Concord Records to create a new company called Concord Music Group.
