tavil

An membraneous percussion instrument found only in the extreme south of India and Sri Lanka and commonly played in temples and at weddings.

A tavil has a shell of nearly spherical shape which is open on both sides. There are 2 skins wrapped around 2 large hemp hoops.

The tavil is played horizontally. The left side is played with a stick while the right side is played with the hand with metal thimbles placed over 4 fingers to give a sharp sound. It is common also to place thick rings around the second knuckle of 3 fingers.
