Tuned bamboo slide rattles, used throughout Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
They are generally made from two or three vertical bamboo pipes or tubes of differing lengths (tuned in octaves) which are loosely attached to a handheld small rectangular wooden frame. There is a small segment cut out of each tube which also affects the pitch they produce. When shaken, the tubes slide along grooves cut into the frame and strike a bamboo or wooden rim to produce a tremolo effect.
Usually, performers use pairs of anklung, one held in each hand. Occasionally, these instruments are suspended so that musicians can play two or more at a time.
