alto guitar

May refer simply to a classical guitar with light strings and a small body, designed to be tuned higher than the normal classical guitar.

But more often will refer to a fairly new instrument, first constructed in the 1960s by the Swedish luthier and furniture maker George Bolin. It usually has 11 strings, but some models have up to 13 or even 14. They are most often used for performance of lute music, particularly Bach.
