gudugudu

A traditional Nigerian small wooden drum of the Yoruba ethnic group. It is is shaped like a bowl with a single animal skin drum head and is played with two long thin rawhide sticks. Tuning paste on the head enables a two-pitch effect. It is tuned by hammering wooden wedges between the bottom metal ring and the drum's base.

As a member of the dundun family of drums, it is said to mimic speech. Some think that it is so melodic and danceable that it can sustain a melody without accompaniment.
