donso n'goni

[dousangoni]

A 6-stringed harp-lute that originated among the donso, a hunter and storyteller caste of the Wasulu people of southern Mali. The sound box consists of a calabash covered with goatskin. On the skin there is a bridge that is held in place by 4 strings and has 6 holes arranged in two parallel rows. The neck is made of a hard wood and passes through the calabash.

Known as the 'hunter's harp', it is now largely reserved for ceremonial occasions.
