portative organ

A Medieval and early Renaissance type of pipe organ, operated by only one person. The portative organ (sometimes referred to simply as a portative) was small enough to be carried by a strap for playing while standing or walking or set on a table, and usually had only one set of pipes. It was normally strapped over the performer's shoulder when in use with the line of pipes pointing away from the body, thus allowing the right hand of the performer to operate the keys and the left hand to operate the bellows.

The portative, although obviously complex to make, was in fairly common use, with other instruments or on its own, for private music and dancing among the wealthier classes. It went out of use during the 15th century.

Pictured is a modern reproduction.
