A large keyboard instrument that actuates an intricate system of felt covered hammers that strike wire strings, producing sounds that may be softened or sustained by means of pedals. The piano consists of essentially a large iron harp with steel strings arranged in courses secured in a metal frame and encased in a wood box and soundboard.

The piano, also called pianoforte, covers a wide musical range with its 88 keys and is built in many shapes and sizes. In grand pianos (the largest), the harp is horizontal - on the same plane as the keyboard. In an upright piano, the harp is vertical - perpendicular to the keyboard.

Invented in Italy in the early 18th century, the piano remains the most popular keyboard instrument. In addition to the classical repertoire, countless piano styles in jazz and popular music permeate our culture and it plays an important role in almost every area of music as a solo, accompanying, or ensemble instrument.
