A form of goblet-shaped talking drum with one skin of goat or antelope hide. It is found in West Africa and originates from Mali, Guinea and Senegal.
It is held between the knees and played using the palms of the hands. It has a characteristic low bass sound, with crisp/sharp tones.
There are different sizes of djembe, with different pitches.The djembe sounds best in a hot, relatively dry, environment.
