In 1991, he won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon. His major breakthrough came in 1996 with the Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor for the thriller The Usual Suspects. He followed this in 2000 with the Oscar for Best Actor for American Beauty.

He currently lives in London and has British citizenship, having become artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in 2003.
