Ed Crane, a  laconic, chain-smoking barber in a small California town, is dissatisfied with his life, but his wife Doris' infidelity presents him with a chance to change it. He blackmails his wife's boss and lover for money to invest in dry cleaning, but his plan goes terribly wrong.
