A founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to landscape painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise. He studied art in Paris where he met other young painters including Renoir, Manet and Sisley. By the mid 1860s, his work was achieving recognition. He lived briefly in London, where he studied the works of Constable and Turner, but his most famous works were painted during his time at Argenteuil and later at Giverny.
