Robert Motherwell
born:
 died:
country:

One of the youngest of the New York School (a phrase he coined), which also included Pollock, Rothko and de Kooning. In 1940, he was introduced to a group of exiled Parisian Surrealists (Ernst, Duchamp, Masson), which proved to be influential on his artistic process. He then went on to play a significant role in laying the foundations for the new movement of Abstract Expressionism.
