An American award, equivalent to the Oscars, Tonys and Emmys, to recognise outstanding achievement in the music industry. The name derives from the original name - the Gramophone Award. The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held in May 1959 to recognise musical accomplishments for the year 1958.
