Montenegrin guslar (performer of epic poetry, sung in unrhymed decasyllabic verse accompanied by a bowed monochord).
He was a zealous Serbian nationalist who was trained as a teacher before fighting first in the Balkan Wars (1912-13) and then World War I, in which he was wounded several times. He first visited the US during WWI to perform at emigrants' clubs in order to raise Serbian nationalist sentiment and a volunteer army. He spent the years 1924-33 touring the US as a propagandist.
