Leading session percussionist who was one of the most in-demand session men in Los Angeles' busy recording studios in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, DaCosta discovered his love for percussion at the age of 5 by exploring the different sounds of everything he could get his hands on. He eventually accumulated over 200 drums, bells, whistles and other percussion instruments. While still in his early teens, he toured the world with various Brazilian ensembles and even danced with samba groups.
On settling in the US in 1973, he joined Sergio Mendes and Brasil '77 for 4 years and, in his spare time, recorded with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Joe Pass and Freddie Hubbard.
After becoming a full-time session musician, he appeared on numerous top-selling recordings spanning a wide variety of musical styles, including works by Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, and pop superstars Madonna, Sting and Michael Jackson.
A dynamic percussionist, an innovative composer and a qualified producer, his musical versatility is also well demonstrated on his four solo albums - Agora (1976), Happy People (1979), Sunrise (1984) and Breakdown (1987). He has also contributed to soundtracks on film and television.
