Born in Canada, she studied with Heinz Hollinger in Germany and was a former member of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris under Pierre Boulez. Bolte took up residence in London in 1978 and began an active freelance career. She has played a wide variety of classical music ranging from West End shows and ballet to Covent Garden and the BBC. She returned to Canada in 1994 and continues to perform.
