Launched by CBS in 1953, originally as a jazz and classical music label.

During the 1960s, Epic became a significant label in rock and roll, R&B and country music and in the 1970s extended to cover a wide range of genres.

Epic became part of Sony when the latter acquired all of CBS's labels in 1988.
