timbau
[timba, timbal]

A Brazilian single-headed and slightly conical hand drum of varying sizes, derived from the Caxambu drum. The shell is wood or metal and is quite light for its size. They are often skinned with a plastic or nylon head about 12 inches in diameter and tuned very tightly, giving a djembe-like sound.

The drum is most often found in Bahia and is used mainly to play axé and samba-reggae. It is played in a similar manner to the atabaque, another hand drum a version of which had been brought to Brazil in slavery and is used in Candomblé rituals.
