saxhorn

A family of valved brass instruments that have conical bores and deep cup-shaped mouthpieces. It was developed by Adolphe Sax, who is also known for creating the saxophone family. The sound of the saxhorn has a characteristic mellow tone quality and blends well with other brass.

There are currently 7 sizes of saxhorn of which the most common are:

  • B flat soprano - the flugelhorn
  • E flat alto/tenor - various known as the alto or tenor horn
  • B flat baritone - the baritone horn
  • B flat bass - the same as the modern euphonium
  • E flat bass - the bass tuba
  • B flat contrabass - the contrabass tuba
