axatse

A gourd rattle or idiophone from Ghana.

It is constructed by hollowing out a gourd or calabash and then beads are attached to it with some string which is woven around it in a fishnet style design.

It is usually smaller than Cuban or Nigerian shekere and is played by striking it on the palms and thighs.

The function of axatse is to reinforce the gankogui rhythm and also to add some colour to the music.
