Nowadays, most electronic keyboards and electronic drums are MIDI enabled, but this is not the case for a typical electric guitar or electric bass. However, a MIDI capability can be added by an additional 6-way pickup that generates a separate signal for each string. These 6 signals are then fed into an electronic unit that converts the pitch of the signals into 6 channels of MIDI data. Some special-purpose MIDI guitars have been made.
