A guitar and mandolin hybrid.

Acoustic versions are rare (and typically 6-string as shown), but the more common form is electric. It is a short scale 12-string guitar tuned one octave higher than standard, giving it the tonal range of a mandolin and enabling a guitarist to achieve a mandolin sound without learning the latter's fingering. The effect is similar to that of capoing a standard 12-string guitar at the 12th fret. However, unlike a standard 12-string guitar, the courses of strings are tuned in unison rather than in octaves.
