calabash

Also known as the bottle gourd and by its French name calebasse. It is a common household utensil in West Africa and is used by some musicians in making the kora and as a resonator on the balafon. Large calabashes (often halved) are simply hollowed, dried and used as percussion instruments, struck with the palms, fingers, wrist or objects to produce a variety of percussive sounds.
