He directed his first play while he was still a student and soon achieved prominence as a stage director and costume designer. He started his occasional film work in 1968 with Work Is a 4-Letter Word (1968). He was the Artistic Director of The Royal Shakespeare Company 1960-1968 and took over direction of the National Theatre from Laurence Olivier in 1973.
