Three young black female soul singers in the early 1960s - Deena Jones, Effie White and Lorrell Robinson - want to become pop stars and get their wish when they are picked to be backup singers for the legendary James 'Thunder' Early. Then they are set free for leads, but Curtis Taylor and Effie's brother C.C. decide that Deena should be lead, which upsets Effie.
