Jerry Lundegaard is a small-town Minnesota car salesman who is heavily in debt. He dreams up a scheme to hire two thugs to kidnap his wife in order to collect a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. His plan falls apart due to his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Police Chief Marge Gunderson.
