Born in Basel, he attended the Dusseldorf Academy and began by painting scenes of the Swiss Alps. However, his style later became firmly Symbolist.

He had an influence on Surrealist painters such as Dalí, Ernst and de Chirico and his painting The Isle of the Dead in particular has been widely admired.
